With the season of tinted moisturiser soon approaching, now is the time to start focusing on bolstering our skin and creating a glowing complexion. Of course we can do this with skincare, but it’s also worth taking an inside-out approach too.
We called on Jon Simcox, founder of the new London juice brand The Craft Juice Company, and tasked him with creating a totally exclusive skin-friendly recipe just for Byrdie readers. Keep scrolling for the recipe, plus Jon’s advice on buying a juicer.
Recipe (makes 2 glasses)
2 kiwi fruit (peeled)
2 large handfuls of spinach
1 small handful of basil leaves
2 green apples (cored)
1 unwaxed lemon
1 glass of fresh green tea (chilled)
Juice all of the ingredients in order, and then mix with the chilled green tea.
So, what are the skin benefits of this green juice? “There is loads of vitamin C from the apples and lemon—vitamin C aids the production of collagen, which maintains elasticity of the skin,” explains Jon. “Kiwi contains vitamins E and K and the antioxidant lutein, which keep our eyes healthy. Spinach is full of iron that promotes oxygen circulation, and basil is packed with vitamin K, which strengthens blood vessel walls and can combat dark circles under the eyes.
“Green tea helps protect the skin against UV ray damage, has great anti-inflammatory properties, and also combats stress!”
What juicer should we invest in? “The Craft Juice Company recommends cold pressing, using slow/masticating juicers. By using this method of juice extraction, all the good stuff inside the fruit and veg ends up in the glass,” explains Jon.
“Unlike conventional methods of juicing that add heat and friction to the process (spinning blades!), cold pressing slowly squeezes and squashes the produce so all the natural vitamins and live enzymes are kept intact.”
