Trends come and go, as they say. But it seems there are some that come, go, and then return again with a fresh, modern twist.

While we may not be interested in pencil-thin brows and butterfly clips at this moment, there are tried-and-true beauty looks that have stood the test of time—from the ’90s all the way to present-day 2016.

We have yet to get over the brown lip (some may say we have Kylie Jenner to thank for that, but we can allow accolade to many that came before her), we still relish letting our roots grow in, and even painting on punky pink highlights has come back stronger than ever.

So, without further ado, we’ve illustrated the best of each trend back to back (or, head to head in this case) to show how not outdated our everlasting love for the grunge-filled decade really is. Plus, we’ve included the products you need to re-create the look.
